Garden

Past

The garden. The inspiration of this entire journey. This is near the beginning. We purchased this little plot of land in the fall of 2013. From the moment I got hear I envisioned a large back yard. Early spring 2014, the shovel went in the ground to work the soil.

This is not just any soil this is a little topsoil mixed with a lot of rocks, surrounded by clay, over a septic field. What was I thinking!? After a lot of manual labor picking rock and building soil, I had a small garden. Then I got pregnant. Suddenly 70 degrees was entirely too hot for me to step foot outside, my garden that year was a little sad.

Then after the arrival of The Kid, it was on. I my small garden was growing and I was determined to expand. I more than doubled the size of the garden that year, but didn’t get much planted in the new bed as I ammended the soil and “picked rocks.”

Present

Finally in 2019 I have 1 garden bed with amazing soil, that firest littel bed, one bed with improving soil, 9 verticle potato towers, a strawbale bed, a huglekultur, some tire beds, and a new “traditional” bed that I will spend the next year or two ammending and picking rocks. If I am lucky, I will produce more than green manure there. I am trying to produce as much as I can with the smallest footprint I can. I hate bringing dirt in via plastic bag (but I do sometimes). I have a near endless supply of sawdust that unfortunatley comes in via plastic bag, but I can’t pass up the free “future soil.”

Future

So join us on this journey and see how things grow.
